How important is the “Thank You” Page in Increasing Customer Loyalty & Sales?

A Thank You page is where your visitors end up after converting. Depending on what you want them to do, a thank you page confirms their purchase, their newsletter sign, their joining your forum, their getting the free trial, or any other conversion actions they do.

Imagine you are the customer and you have just bought a DSLR camera from ABCRetailer.com. After submitting the form, you are taken to a page that simply says “Thank you for your purchase.” Nothing more.

If you are not put off by how impersonal that is, you would have no reason to stay on the site. And because it doesn’t even tell what actions they want you to take next, you just leave.

What just happened there? ABCRetailer.com just lost the chance to gain your loyalty and increase their sales.

Most of the people who buy your products, who sign up to your newsletter, or who join your discussion board will see your target page. What you have here is a group of people who are interested in what you have to offer. It is up to you to tap into their loyalty and use it to increase sales.

What’s more, it is not too difficult to do. Consider the following scenarios.

  1. If somebody buys a doll from you, you could use your thank you page to offer them doll clothes, dollhouses and other related products.
  2. If they subscribe to a newsletter, it means that they are interested in your topic. If they took the time to fill out a form to receive a newsletter that talks about SEO tips, you could use your thank you page to offer SEO services. Or you could direct them to your blog where you talk more about SEO best practices, in the hope that they will continue to visit your Web site until they are ready to buy SEO services from you.
  3. Connect with them. Your thank you page could also serve as an invitation to add you on Facebook or follow you on Twitter. If you have just served them a data product such as a free e-book, ask them to share your e-book on Facebook and Twitter. This will help you keep them connected to you and allow you to stay in their radar. What’s more, they will also be recommending your content and your products to their friends.
  4. Show promotions or deals. You can simply give a 10% discount to your new subscribers or new customers.
  5. Show them that you care. A thank you page is also a great way to learn more about your customers. You can have a form there asking them to tell you about themselves, or perhaps ask them for feedback.
  6. Make it easier for them to contact you. On top of social media connections, you can provide phone numbers, e-mail addresses and toll-free numbers that they could use to get in touch with you. If you have an order tracking service, show them how to link to it.

As you see, it is easy to use thank you pages as a way to increase customer loyalty and sales. In fact, Joanna Lord at Entrepreneur.com lists it as one of the five ways that you could do to increase customer loyalty.

These simple additions can go a long way to make customers feel welcome and valued, and, as a result, they will come back to you for more.
